Background
Wayne Powell is a Certified Financial Planner who joined Staples Rodway Asset Management Limited in May 2006 as an Associate Director and Investment Advisor. He has been actively engaged in the finance sector for 20 years, developing a wide range of skills during this time dealing with the ever changing financial markets. During this time, 18 years have been spent as a client advisor.Prior to joining staples Rodway, Wayne worked as a Private Banker for nine years providing financial solutions for a range of clients including various type of trusts, practising lawyers, accountants, company directors of both local and multi-national companies, retired farmers and businessmen, pilots and various tradesmen. The financial solutions ranged from foreign currency loan facilities through to diversified investment portfolios and income generating bond portfolios. The focus was always on a full understanding of the client’s financial needs and then matching this with an appropriate financial solution. Wayne also assisted clients in the wealth creation phase by structuring strategies to provide for retirement planning.
Experience in Corporate roles include:
BNZ PRIVATE BANKING – during his time with the BNZ Wayne looked after the funding requirements and investment assets of a significant number of the banks’ most affluent personal clients. This included providing full banking services, including foreign exchange facilities and investment advice ranging from the most appropriate short-term cash investments through to large fully diversified personal investment portfolios. While at the BNZ, Wayne spent 2 years as a member of the Investment Review Committee which was responsible for creating and administering the Bank’s Statement of Policies and Investment Objectives (SIPO) and also included approving asset allocation and an approved investment list.
WESTPAC FINANCIAL SERVICES (NZ) LIMITED – Wayne was originally employed as a Consultant responsible for providing bank clients with specialised superannuation, investment and insurance advice. The role also included providing ongoing education to the wider staff regarding investment and personal risk management strategies. Wayne then moved into a more specialised role dealing with the bank’s more affluent personal clients and provided them with personalised diversified investment portfolios.
OTHER RELATED EXPERIENCE – Apart from 16 years working in the banking sector Wayne spent time working for a finance company providing funding to the business sector and working with investors using debenture stock. He also spent time with a share broking company providing comprehensive financial planning advice to clients with needs other than a straight transactional broking service.

By focusing on client objectives Wayne has been able to demonstrate to many clients that previously held misconceptions about the financial markets has resulted in them making investment decisions which have been at odds with their ultimate goals. By applying the principals of Modern Portfolio Theory he has been able to greatly reduce their risk exposure and generate reliable income streams.As part of the ongoing membership requirements of the Institute of Financial Advisors, Wayne regularly attends economic briefings, industry seminars and conferences to remain fully current with markets and investment opportunities.
