Tracy Hickman
(ACMA, MMgt)

Background

Tracy joined the Staples Rodway consulting team in 2007, bringing over twenty years experience in industry, gained at a variety of companies, from multi-nationals to small and medium enterprises, in Europe and New Zealand.

During her career, Tracy has held the positions of Director, Financial Controller and other managerial roles. In addition, Tracy taught accounting and software skills to adult students in the United Kingdom. Tracy is a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA), with a Joint Honours degree in Accounting and Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management.

She has completed a Masters in Management with a special focus on Succession Planning. In particular her Thesis was on the reasons for a lack of formal succession planning in New Zealand privately owned family businesses.

Specialist Areas

Tracy’s principal area of practice is in commercial finance, including due diligence, strategy development, dealing with merger and acquisition activities (both vendor and purchaser), treasury management, and management accounting activities. Many of these roles included significant experience regarding the Human Resource impact of company restructuring.

Personal Interests

Tracy is a keen runner, regularly competing at long distance events including the full Auckland Marathon in 2008, and the Paris marathon in 2010. In addition to swimming and snowboarding, Tracy is a classic car enthusiast and runs the New Zealand Suzuki Cappuccino Owners Register.

Tracy has significant experience in :

  • Practice Manager for a firm of Financial Advisors based in Invercargill. The role included assisting the Managing Director with providing leadership and direction to employees of the company. Successfully facilitated the completion of a corporatisation process, whereby the existing contracted Financial Advisers and a multinational finance company became shareholders in a new company.
  • Financial Controller for a Queenstown property development company, based in Invercargill. Key elements of this role involved forming and maintaining relationships with financial institutions, enabling a significant amount of finance to be raised. Responsible for detailed cash flow forecasting and treasury management.
  • Company accountant for a yacht builder, based in the United Kingdom. The role included advising the new owner on strategy and accounting implications for a group of twelve companies. Designed a monthly Board reporting package, facilitating major decisions for the Directors.
  • Director and Company Secretary for a window manufacturer, based in the United Kingdom. Initially worked with the existing owner of the company through the sale process, including due diligence for the two companies forming the group. Responsible for raising investment capital for the new owners, and integrating the existing companies into one organization. Evaluated potential acquisitions, implemented systems and controls in purchased companies. Prepared a prospectus for the new company, and facilitated the due diligence and asset evaluation process, prior to the company being sold again.
  • Group Accountant for an IT recruitment agency, based in the United Kingdom. Produced and implemented a business plan for the formation of an international division, and a call centre operation. Prepared a prospectus for the sale of the group of companies.
  • Management and analyst roles for multinational healthcare company, based in the United Kingdom and at the European headquarters in Germany. Responsible for all aspects of planning and analysis for European diagnostic instruments division. Represented European interests in the development of a world-wide product costing system. Acted as European coordinator for financial aspects of a company merger, liaising with US headquarters.
