Graduate Information

Life at Staples Rodway

At Staples Rodway we seek talented, balanced individuals who are passionate about who they are and what they do.

Staples Rodway have offices in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Hawkes Bay and Christchurch and we look to hire graduates and summer interns each year. Some of our offices hire outside of the usual March graduate recruitment programme (for example New Plymouth also hire graduates in July).

We want people to join us who love what they do and who have a strong desire to succeed, but who also have some perspective on the bigger picture and leave room in their lives for the other things that matter to them – sports, hobbies, friends, family or just chilling out.

We’re big enough to offer graduates a huge variety of work and a broad range of opportunities, but there’s also the opportunity to gain specialised knowledge in areas of particular interest to you. Typically our graduates find that the experience they gain with us in their early years, really kick-starts their career – with the opportunity to move up through the ranks faster than at bigger firms.

Working at Staples Rodway

Tax

Most business owners appreciate the importance of controlling costs, but many still miss legitimate opportunities to minimise tax. Staples is a leading authority on taxation with a team whose experience covers corporate, legal and accounting domains. We place great emphasis on keeping up to date with changes in tax legislation and on providing innovative advice to our clients.

Staples Rodway are well known as tax specialists. If this is an area of interest for you, then you could not be in a better place to learn, and continue to learn, about this rapidly changing environment.

Our taxation answers for our clients include:

  • Corporate taxes
  • International Tax planning
  • Tax effective structuring and funding
  • GST and FBT
  • Personal Wealth and Asset Planning
  • Trusts
  • Objections and Taxation Review Authority Hearings
  • Tax Audits and investigations

As a Tax graduate you’ll have ideally successfully completed a conjoint BCom/LLB. It is possible that you will spend the first year of your career with our Business Advisory Unit establishing the fundamentals before moving into your career with our Tax Unit.

Audit and Assurance

Our Audit and Assurance procedures go beyond providing an opinion on the financial statements. To be effective, assurance work demands a deep understanding of our client’s business, its goals and the market in which it operates. Once we have that under our belt, we can step back from the raw numbers of financial statements to see the real business issues underneath. This enables us to identify real opportunities for efficiencies and savings for our clients. Our client base includes a number of medium to large businesses operating in various sectors in New Zealand and abroad. The diversity and the nature of our work will provide you with an excellent understanding of business operations. With our training and audit experience, you will have unlimited career opportunities.

We have a "paperless" audit approach and all our audit staff are provided with the appropriate technology to enable this. Staples uses sophisticated audit evaluation and analytical tools that help us identify risk and opportunities facing our clients’ businesses.

We provide assurance work for:

  • Due diligence for mergers and acquisitions
  • Prospectus reports
  • Statutory audits
  • Reports on compliance with Agreements and Regulations
  • International Financial Reporting Standards
  • Computer system security and computer application controls
  • Software licensing audits
  • Fraud investigations

As an Audit and Assurance Graduate, you will have completed your NZICA requirements and exhibit skills that will enable you to engage and work alongside our clients.

Advisory

Business Advisory

Our Business Advisory team includes top graduates through to qualified business advisors. Many are skilled business people in their own right or have extensive experience within particular specialities. Therefore, while a client’s primary contact with Staples Rodway may handle most of their affairs, they can (and frequently do) call on the specialist advice of others whenever the situation arises. As a result, all our clients benefit from the combined experience of our different Units, and you get the exposure to a full realm of different work.

Our clients cover a broad range of New Zealand and overseas businesses including high value individuals through to multi-million dollar turnover trading clients. As a graduate, you will have the ability to work closely with, and be mentored by, directors who have achieved some outstanding accomplishments throughout their own careers.

As a Business Advisory graduate, you’ll be advising our clients on:

  • Financial Accounts for companies, sole traders, partnerships and trusts
  • Preparation and lodgement of Inland Revenue returns and calculation and payment of taxes due
  • Compliance with the Companies Act 1993 including filing of annual returns
  • Management accounting, budgeting and forecasting
  • Developing outsourcing solutions
  • Monitoring and management of Trusts, including gifting and day to day operations.

Our Business Advisory graduates are dedicated to providing the best advice to our clients. You will have completed your NZICA requirements or be very close to doing so.
