A Year on from Graduating - Did it fulfil my expectations?
"I had a lot of expectations when I started as a graduate at Staples Rodway with the main ones being the work environment and culture portrayed, the focus on being an all round individual and the secondment opportunities available.
A year on from graduating, all my expectations before I started my job have been met adequately. I enjoy the work environment as we have a great office with up to date facilities, a fairly diverse team who I get along with well at work and outside of work as well who all have that work hard, play hard attitude. Also, managers and partners are really helpful and easy to interact with. The work culture is also great with many different functions being organized during the year which are fun to attend.
I also have had exposure to a broad variety of clients that I am working on and have been given the added responsibility to senior a few jobs in my 2nd year which has been really helpful in terms of me understanding how the whole audit process works.
I also was able to go on a 3 month secondment to Chicago at the end of my first year which was a great opportunity as I got first hand experience of working in a different country and adjusting to their different work environment and culture. It was also a great way to build your networks."

A Year in the Life of a Graduate
"After 4 years of study I was looking forward to getting into the workforce, experiencing a whole new lifestyle and earning money. However, moving to the big smoke of Auckland was a huge step for a girl from a small town like Gisborne. Staples Rodway helped make the transition to Auckland and full-time work easy.
To kick off the year, all the Staples Graduates were brought together to Auckland for an induction week. This was a great experience as it gave us the opportunity to get to know the other graduates and start developing national networks before we even started working.
I found the first few weeks quite intense as we were learning a lot and trying to find our feet in the corporate world. Everyone was extremely helpful, friendly and more than willing to pass on valuable advice – they had all been Grads once too. I found the open door policy particularly beneficial as it gave me the chance to get to know and interact with all staff members, including the directors.
Because I am a very social person who enjoys meeting and interacting with people I decided Audit was the best area for me, as you are regularly out of the office and meeting people. From “Day One”, I was dealing with clients - at first this was a little scary but soon became second nature to me. The work is always interesting as you go into different businesses and understand their business before completing your required task. I also found Audit gave me an excellent overview of all business areas, something which will help me immensely in the future.
It is a priority of mine to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I have been closely involved in sport throughout my life - I didn’t want this to change - and it hasn’t. In fact this year I have been involved in more sport than when I was studying at university. Staples has an active social club who organize events on a monthly basis; highlights for me included the Waiheke Wine Tour and the annual Christmas Party. There are sports teams and inter-division sporting fixtures, so something to suit everyone’s interests.
The year in the life of a graduate at Staples Rodway has been an invaluable experience and a strong platform to start my professional career."
