It’s important to us that you know what is happening all the way along the recruitment process.
Below are some guidelines covering the dates that we’ll get back to you, when we’ll be visiting your University and when we’ll be making offers. We want you to be assured that we’ll keep in touch so that you can be sure you make the right decision for your career.
We’ll be visiting your University between 10 - 20 March as part of the University Career Fairs. This is your chance to meet us personally and ask us face to face what it’s really like. We’ll have a mixture of people including Managers, Directors, Graduates and HR who can all give you the low down on Staples and help you to make the best decision to kick start your career in the right direction.

For those of you who attend a tertiary institute that we will not be visiting as part of our career fairs, you are welcome to ring us to discuss any questions you may have.
Applications open on 4 February and close on .
The HR Manager of each office reviews every application that comes to us and compares our needs against your skills, experience and qualifications. From this initial review, we’ll compile a shortlist of suitable applicants. We aim to have this completed by .
If you’re part of this shortlist, you’ll be invited to attend an interview. This will take place over the week 14-17 April and will be either face-to-face or over the telephone (depending on where you may live). These initial interviews will be with the HR Manager and in most instances, a Manager of the team that you’ve expressed interest in working in.
Following the first interview, we’ll undertake some testing. This is all on-line, takes around 45 minutes to complete and can be done wherever you have Internet access. This testing, together with your CV and interview, help us to form a more rounded view of you and your fit with Staples.
If all goes well up to this point, we’ll invite you to take part in a second interview in our offices which takes place over the week 28 April to 2 May. This interview is likely to involve a Director from the team that you elect to work with. You’ll also have the opportunity to have a tour of our offices and meet some of the people that you will potentially be working with.
We aim to get offers out to you by .
We ideally like to you to have met all your NZICA requirements before starting with us as a graduate. However, we will consider you if you have few remaining papers to go and we’ll work with you in considering what time you will need to attend classes and how we can support that.
Although a solid academic transcript can be a good indication of your abilities, there are also a lot of other things that are important to us. For instance, examples of how you exhibit balance in your life, what experiences you have, how you will interact with our clients and fit into our culture. We take selection of our graduates seriously – each of you have the potential to be the future leaders of the firm – so we want to see evidence of those leadership qualities.

This happens and we appreciate that sometimes there are good reasons why you didn’t quite reach the standard necessary. If this is the case, and you feel you have good reasons, let us know in your cover letter.
Our graduates start early March 2009. Summer interns start with us from late November and work until mid February (to work in with your University break)
We appreciate that sometimes the “waiting” for a response can be stressful. What we want you to know is that we will not treat you like just a number. Reviewing each application can take some time, but you’ve taken the time to submit your application, so we owe it to you to review your application carefully.
However, if you have any queries or want to check the progress of your application, please contact Michelle Greenwood, HR Administrator, michelle.greenwood@staplesrodway.com.
Obviously what you can bring to Staples will be unique and we acknowledge that. That’s why we’ve allowed a place for you to attach a cover letter as well as your CV and academic transcript. That way you’re not limited to the on-line application form to express all those things about you that will make you a perfect 2009 Staples Graduate.
You’ll be asked to expand on your CV and some of the things you may have noted in your cover letter. We want to know what makes you passionate about pursuing a career in Accounting, and what you feel you can gain from choosing to kick start your career with Staples. We’ll also want to know about what plans you have for the future. It is important to remember to be yourself – the interview process is an opportunity for you and us to be able to get to know each other a bit better and to make sure the fit is right for both parties.
For both our interviews and office visit, business attire is best.
